Columbia Pictures announced that its Ghostbusters movie franchise crossed the $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office following the No. 1 weekend debut for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which made an estimated $45.2 million in ticket sales across 4,345 screens through March 24.

The tally tops the previous release, 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife with $44 million in opening ticket sales, but lags behind 2018’s all-female cast Ghostbusters at $46 million.

Based on the original 1984 Ghostbusters, directed by the late Ivan Reitman, and written by Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis, Frozen Empire is written and directed by Gil Kenan, along with co-writers Jason Reitman (Ivan’s son) and Jason Blumenfeld.

With an 84% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and a 4-star PostTrak rating, Columbia contends the upcoming spring break week is positioning the Frozen Empire, which featured an ensemble cast featuring new and original characters, for an extended theatrical run before transitioning to retail and Netflix.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ sci-fi sequel Dune: Part Two added $17.6 million in revenue to up its four-week North American total past $233 million, and $574 million worldwide.

Neon horror film Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, topped expectations with $5.3 million in ticket sales across 2,354 screens.

Lionsgate’s dog drama Arthur the King, added $4.4 million in revenue across 3,003 screens, upping the Mark Wahlberg-starrer near $15 million revenue after two weekends.

Finally, Paramount Pictures’ biopic Bob Marley: One Love added $2.4 million in global ticket sales to up its box office past $173.4 million.
