Apple TV+ Renews ‘For All Mankind’ for Season Five, Orders Spinoff

John Latchem

The Apple TV+ streaming service announced it has renewed the sci-fi drama “For All Mankind” for a fifth season, in addition to ordering a spinoff series called “Star City.”

“For All Mankind,” created by Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert and Ronald D. Moore, and produced by Sony Pictures Television, explores an alternate reality in which the Soviet Union landed on the moon before the United States, leading to an escalation of the space race. Within the timeline of the series, humanity established bases on the moon by the 1980s, and landed on Mars in the 1990s. The fourth season dealt with political strife between Mars and Earth in 2003, and teased a fifth season set in an alternate 2012.

“Star City,” which will be showrun by Nedivi and Wolpert, explores how the Soviets in the alternate reality were able to beat America in the race to the moon.

“Our fascination with the Soviet space program has grown with every season of ‘For All Mankind,’” said executive producers Wolpert and Nedivi. “The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race. We could not be more excited to continue building out the alternate history universe of ‘For All Mankind’ with our partners at Apple and Sony.”
