‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ Stays Atop DVD and Blu-ray Sales Charts

Disney-owned 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: The Way of Water remained No. 1 for a second week on the Circana VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended July 1.

The visual effects blockbuster from director James Cameron, which features a return to the alien moon of Pandora and a storyline on ocean-dwelling Na’vi tribes, and was the top-earning global box office draw of 2022 with more than $2.3 billion. It was also the No. 1 seller on the 4K disc chart.

Moving up a spot to return to No. 2 on the overall disc sales chart was Universal Pictures’ animated The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which sold about 76.7% as many total copies as the top title during the week. It was No. 3 on the Blu-ray chart and No. 4 on the 4K chart.

Down a spot to No. 3 on the overall chart, but remaining No. 2 on the Blu-ray and 4K charts, was Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4. On Blu-ray it sold about 97% as many copies as Avatar: The Way of Water during the week.

The week’s top newcomer, and No. 4 on the overall and Blu-ray disc charts, was Warner’s Evil Dead Rise, the fifth film in the “Evil Dead” horror series that was famously intended for a streaming debut on HBO Max before it was shifted to theaters, where it earned $67 million domestically. It was No. 3 on the 4K chart.

HD formats accounted for 73% of total Evil Dead Rise sales, with 30% from 4K disc and 43% from regular Blu-ray.

Rounding out the top five on the overall and Blu-ray charts was Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

On the Media Play News rental chart for the week ended July 2, the top five were unchanged from the previous week. The Super Mario Bros. Movie remained No. 1 for a third week, with Sony Pictures’ 65 at No. 2, Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves at No. 3, Universal’s Renfield at No. 4, and Warner’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods at No. 5.
