Cocaine Bear
April 27, 2023
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Cocaine Bear debuted at No. 1 on the Circana VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart the week ended April 22.
The horror-comedy film, about a bear that goes on a rampage in the 1980s after becoming addicted to cocaine smugglers dropped from a plane into a Georgia national park, earned $64.4 million at the domestic box office.
No. 2 on both charts was another newcomer, Warner’s Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the third installment in the franchise starring Channing Tatum as a male stripper. It drew $26 million from U.S. theaters and sold about 38% as many units as the top title.
The top seller the previous three weeks, Lionsgate’s Plane, dropped to No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart. It was No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart.
Universal’s Marlowe, also newly released during the week, debuted at No. 4 on the overall chart and No. 12 on the Blu-ray chart. It stars Liam Neeson as famed detective Philip Marlowe from the mystery novels by Raymond Chandler.
No. 5 on the overall disc sales chart was Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The DreamWorks Animation sequel was No. 7 on the Blu-ray chart.

On the Blu-ray chart, No. 3 was the previous week’s top Blu-ray, Crunchyroll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. It was No. 8 overall.
The No. 5 Blu-ray seller was Warner’s Rebel Without a Cause, which was newly released on 4K disc. It was No. 13 on the overall chart, but with nearly 100% of its total unit sales coming from the new 4K version, it was No. 1 on the dedicated 4K disc chart.
Blu-ray disc formats accounted for 43% of total Cocaine Bear unit sales, 40% for Magic Mike’s Last Dance, and just 27% for Marlowe. Those titles were not released with a 4K disc option.
The Media Play News rental chart for the week ended April 23 also had Cocaine Bear at No. 1 and Magic Mike’s Last Dance at No. 2.
Plane dropped to No. 3 after three weeks in the top rental spot, with Marlowe debuting at No. 4, and Sony Pictures’ A Man Called Otto sliding a spot to No. 5.
