Disney/Marvel Studios’ third installment of its Guardians of the Galaxy superhero movie franchise met industry expectations with a projected $114 million in North American ($282 million globally) weekend ticket sales through May 7.
The last “Guardians” movie about a group of intergalactic misfits written and directed by James Gunn, who is now co-CEO of DC Studios at Warner Bros. Discovery, finished more than 28% below the 2017 North American opening for “Vol. 2” at $146.5 million, but almost 21% ahead of 2014 original at $94.3 million.
By cracking the $100 million domestic threshold, “Vol. 3” starts the summer movie theatrical box office on a positive — and the second highest opening weekend gross of the year behind Universal Pictures/Illumination Entertainment’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $146 million. The latter added $18.6 million in ticket sales to up its North American tally to $518 million and $1.15 billion worldwide.
Scuttled HBO Max original movie Evil Dead Rise added $5.7 million in third weekend ticket sales to up its North American tally to $54 million ($110 million worldwide).
Lionsgate’s Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret took in an estimated $3.4 million to up its North American tally to $12.6 million. The studio’s Finnish World War 2 drama Sisu added $1.08 million to up its total past $5.5 million. Finally, John Wick: Chapter 4 took in an estimated $2.4 million to up its North American total past $180 million.
