‘Quantumania’ Tops Disc Sales in May; ‘Wakanda Forever’ Remains No. 1 for 2023

Disney-owned Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania debuted at No. 1 on the top 10 list of physical-media sales for May 2023, according to Circana’s VideoScan tracking service that compiles DVD and Blu-ray transactions. 

Released on disc May 16, the third “Ant-Man” film introduces a new threat into the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the form of Kang, a warlord trapped in the Quantum Realm who seeks control of the multiverse. It earned $214.5 million at the domestic box office.

Each of the top four titles for May were the top sellers their week of release.

No. 2 for the month was Paramount Home Entertainment’s Yellowstone: Season 5, Part 1, a batch of eight episodes from the popular Paramount Network series starring Kevin Costner as a Montana ranch owner. It was released on Blu-ray and DVD May 9.

Paramount Home Entertainment’s 80 for Brady was No. 3 for May. The film stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno and Sally Field as four elderly friends who decide to take a road trip to see Tom Brady play in the Super Bowl. It earned $39.3 million at the domestic box office and arrived on disc May 2.

No. 4 for May was Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The film, the latest installment of the DC Comics movie franchise and a sequel to 2019’s Shazam!, finds the title character and his family confronting angry gods who seek to reclaim their power. It underperformed theatrically with just $57.6 million at the domestic box office and was released on disc May 23.

May’s No. 5 seller was Lionsgate’s faith-based Jesus Revolution, which had been No. 4 in April.

The No. 6 seller for May was MGM’s Creed III, another May 23 disc release. The latest entry in the “Rocky” spinoff ofboxing movies finds Creed confronting a controversial figure from his past. It earned $156.2 million at the domestic box office.

The No. 7 seller for the month was Universal Pictures’ Knock at the Cabin, a May 9 disc release. The latest film from director M. Night Shyamalan, about a vacationing family taken hostage by armed strangers who demand they make a choice to avert the apocalypse, earned $35.4 million at the domestic box office.

The top disc seller for April, Universal’s Cocaine Bear, settled for the No. 8 position in May. The comedic take on horror films is based on a real incident and involves a bear in the Georgia woods that gets addicted to cocaine jettisoned by drug smugglers, and goes on a rampage in search of more.

No. 2 in April was the Lionsgate actioner Plane, starring Gerard Butler as a commercial airline pilot who must team with a ruthless criminal to rescue his passengers after they crash land in a hostile country. It arrived on disc at the end of March, where it was No. 12 for that month, and proceeded to top the sales charts for three consecutive weeks before being upended by Cocaine Bear. It grossed $32.1 million at U.S. theaters.

The top seller for March, Universal’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, slid to No. 3 in April. The DreamWorks Animation sequel, in which the swashbuckling kitty from the “Shrek” movies seeks a magical wish to restore his nine lives, arrived on disc at the end of February and remained a relatively strong seller.

Liosngate’s actioner Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre bowed at No. 9 on the May disc chart, having arrived on shelves May 16.

On the year-to-date chart, the top four were unmoved by the results of May: Black Panther: Wakanda Forever remained No. 1, Warner’s Black Adam was No. 2, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (No. 10 for May) was No. 3, and Paramount’s 2022 holdover Top Gun: Maverick was No. 4.

Quantumania joined the ranks of the yearly top 10 at No. 5.

That pushes Sony Pictures’ A Man Called Otto to No. 6 for the year.

Yellowstone: Season 5, Part 1 took over the No. 7 spot, dropping Crunchyroll’s Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero to No. 8, and Universal’s M3GAN to No. 9.
