The summer box office is set to begin with a bang with Sony Pictures Entertainment’s lucrative “Spider-Man” franchise debuting the latest animated release — Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse — June 2. The movie, whose voice cast includes Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, Oscar Isaac as Miguel O’Hara, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy and Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, generated an impressive $17.5 million in special Thursday screenings in select markets.

The follow-up to 2018’s animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which generated more than $384 million at the global box office, remains a popular place holder for Sony’s “Spider-Man” theatrical juggernaut. The last live-action release, Spider-Man: No Way Home, generated more than $1.9 billion worldwide following its Dec. 15, 2021, debut.

Across the Spider-Verse is projected to sell north of $115 million worth of tickets in North America through June 4, according to Box Office Pro. Sony is projecting revenue of around $85 million on a reported $100 million production budget.

The movie should top last weekend’s box office champ, Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, which is expected to generated around $37 million in second-weekend ticket sales.

The second new weekend release, 20th Century Studios’ horror flick The Boogeyman, is projected to generate more than $13 million in opening box office revenue.

Among  holdovers, Universal Pictures’ Fast X continues its speedy drop in ticket sales, with $10 million in projected ticket sales in its third week of release. That should top a projected $8 million-plus for Disney/Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, $3 million for Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and $2.1 million for Lionsgate’s Robert De Niro father/son adult comedy About My Father.
