Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse beat studio and industry expectations, generating $120.5 million in projected North American opening box office revenue through June 4. The follow-up to 2018’s successful Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, almost quadrupled the original’s $35 million opening domestic box office enroute to a $208.6 million global opening due in large part to $17.3 million in ticket sales generated across China’s theatres.

Across the Spider-Verse is the No. 2 opening North American box office in 2023 after Universal Pictures’ The Super Mario Bros. Movie at $146 million and the No. 3 all-time for the Spider-Man movie franchise, including live-action releases.

Newcomer and originally intended Hulu movie release, The Boogeyman, co-starring “Yellowjackets” Sophie Thatcher and based on the eponymous Stephen King novel, finished No. 3 over the weekend with $20 million in global revenue, including $12.3 million across North American screens. No. 2 in theaters was last weekend’s box office champ, Disney’s live action remake of The Little Mermaid with another $40 million in ticket sales, to up its global tally past $326 million.

Universal’s  Fast X added more than $9 million in ticket sales to up its North American tally past $128 million at the domestic box office. That figure is luckily dwarfed by $474 million in international revenue, upping the movie’s global haul past $600 million mark.
