‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Remains Atop Redbox Disc Rentals; ‘Hypnotic’ No. 1 on Digital Chart

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie remained No. 1 for a third week on the Redbox disc rental chart the week ended July 2. The adaptation of Nintendo’s Super Mario” video game franchise earned more than $573.5 million at the domestic box office. It was No. 6 on the Redbox On Demand chart.

The top title on the Redbox On Demand chart, which tracks digital VOD and sellthrough transactions, was Relativity Media’s Hypnotic. The film stars Ben Affleck as a detective investigating a string of impossible, high-end heists, who begins to question his own reality after discovering the man behind these robberies is a government-trained hypnotic.

On the disc chart, the top five titles remained the same from the previous week.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller 65 remained No. 2 on the Redbox disc rental chart, which tracks DVD and Blu-ray Disc rentals at Redbox’s thousands of red kiosks, and slipped two spots to No. 8 on the Redbox On Demand chart.

Holding steady at No. 3 on the Redbox disc rental chart was Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. It slid two spots to No. 10 on the Redbox On Demand chart.

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield remained No. 4 on the disc chart and was also No. 4 on the digital chart.

The No. 5 disc rental was again Warner’s Shazam! Fury of the Gods. The DC Comics sequel finds the Shazam Family confronting ancient forces that want to reclaim their magical powers.

On the digital chart, No. 2 was director Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant, from MGM. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a U.S. Army sergeant who sets out to rescue the family of the Afghan interpreter who saved his life. It had been the top digital title the previous week.

The No. 3 digital title was Warner’s Evil Dead Rise, the latest installment of the “Evil Dead” franchise.

Universal’s Fast X dropped two spots to No. 5 on the Redbox On Demand chart.
