Universal Pictures/Illumination Entertainment’s blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues set records, adding an estimated $87 million in second weekend ticket sales through April 16. The tally — which accounted for 60% of the total North American box office — is the most for an animated movie in its sophomore weekend, breaking the previous record held by Disney’s Frozen 2. Last weekend’s debut set a record for an animation theatrical debut.
The Nintendo-themed release is also the No. 1 grossing theatrical title in 2023 thus far with $678 million in revenue worldwide after 12 days of release, including $347 million across North American screens.
Significantly behind, the theatrical debut of Sony Pictures/Screen Gems’ horror movie The Pope’s Exorcist generated more than $9 million in North America, and more than doubling the tally worldwide.
Rounding out the podium, Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 took in an estimated $7.925 million, to up the Keanu Reeves actioner’s North American total past $160 million, and almost $350 million globally, including nearly $190 million internationally. The total eclipses John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum ($328 million) as the highest-grossing release in the franchise. Those results were bolstered in part by the movie’s South Korean debut at $5.9 million across more than 1,500 screens.
Amazon Studios’ AIR added $3.37 million on Saturday, which should push the biopic’s weekend tally past $7.72 million. With this solid second week hold following a holiday weekend and the continued outstanding audience reactions and overall word-of-mouth, Amazon expects the movie to continue playing solidly in the coming weeks.
Finally, Universal’s comedy horror Renfield, co-starring Nicholas Hoult as the title’s character and Nicolas Cage as Dracula’s henchman, opened with a disappointing $7.7 million ticket sales.
